  • Top 9 Nursery Must-Haves

    Top 9 Nursery Must-Haves

I’m sure as soon as you found out you were pregnant you immediately searched Pinterest for nursery inspiration. Yes, having a magazine-worthy nursery is great. But besides having matching curtains and carpet, what do you really need in your nursery to make it functional and beautiful? Here’s our top rated items to make your life easier.

    White noise machinenursery

Babies come from a loud environment in the womb. They find white noise soothing and will typically sleep longer and better with a white noise machine. They also help drown out some of the noises happening outside the nursery.

    Glider chairnursery

Whether it’s a glider, rocking chair, or just a large overstuffed chair, a comfy spot to sit while feeding and putting baby to sleep is a necessity! Make sure it’s comfy – you’ll be spending a lot of time here.

    Night lightnursery

Although you don’t want something bright enough to interfere with your little one’s sleep, you’ll need a little light in the room for late-night diaper changes and feedings.

    Diaper pailnursery

You don’t necessarily need the Diaper Genie, but some sort of container for your diapers is necessary. I will say though, the Diaper Genie keeps any kind of smell out of the room, and they just came out with these super cute designs to blend right into your nursery.

    Changing padnursery

Unless you have the space and the cash, you don’t need to invest in an expensive change table. A simple change pad with a cute, removable cover on the dresser will function just as well.

    Play matnursery

A tummy time mat or activity gym is an item that will be used from birth until after baby is mobile. They enjoy hanging out on the soft, coloured mat and will eventually start grabbing and pulling at the toys.

    Humidifiernursery

It’s pretty common for babies to suffer from congestion, and it especially gets worse at night. A humidifier works wonders for keeping their nasal passages clear so they can breathe and sleep easily.

    Swing/bouncer/baby seatnursery

You will need somewhere safe you can set your baby down, even for just a few minutes, while you do something. A swing can come in handy for nap times, but just a simple baby seat will also suffice so you can at least get something made for dinner.

    Booksnursery

Even young babies benefit from reading with their parents and will grow up to enjoy this time with you. Start their collection early and find a special way of displaying them.

  • Pregnant With Your 2nd or 3rd Child? Let’s Prepare

Pregnant With Your 2nd or 3rd Child? Let’s Prepare

    Congratulations on your growing family!

Being pregnant with your second or third child is very exciting and wonderful on so many levels. It can also leave you wondering, how will I plan for more than one? A mom, with any amount of children, has a big job, for sure. So many moms I speak to, that have one, often say “I just don’t know how you do it with two little ones!” and I myself often say to moms of multiples, “I just don’t know how you do it with three!”

We often get a bit of anxiety or uncertainty of how we could handle that new bundle of joy, on top of taking care of our existing children and, well, life. The truth is, everyone eventually figures it out.

But just to calm any nerves, questions, or nesting stage anxieties (because trust me, we have all been there), here are some tips on how to prepare for your second or third child.

    child

    Purge

This is the time to do a refresh and get rid of items you no longer need or want. If you are staying in the same place, you may find yourself needing space that wasn’t allotted for baby. So, get rid of all things you just can do without (perhaps old furniture not being used, items that need to be replaced, etc.). Doing so, even a little bit, is actually soothing and makes you feel like you are prepared, feeling less cluttered leads to feeling less anxious.

    Storage Furniture

Following up to purging, get some new storage furniture. Things that your older children will need such as larger toy boxes, bookcase shelves, or wardrobes. Aim to buy some items that they can utilize by putting their things away in. This will help you as the older children are more aware of where their things go during cleanup.

    List New Items

Prepare by listing out the items you do need to be for the next baby. Perhaps some items can be passed down as hand-me-downs (crib, playpens, bassinets, etc) or do you need certain new items that were worn out previously? List out all: crib bedding, bottles, and nipples, soothers, blankets, sleepers, etc. Having a list of your needs will be so helpful, even if you can’t go shopping yourself, you can pass off the list to a handy helper. Which brings me to the next point.

    Enlist Help

Your partner and yourself will be busy during the delivery and one can never really anticipate how it will go. So secure trusted babysitting for the other children. While doing that, also ensure you have some sitters/helpers around for the first few weeks. While you are caring for the newborn and recovering, it will be helpful to have some extra hands around the place. Trust me!

    Meal Plan

Planning meals and preparing meals those first few weeks can be a challenge. Especially when you have other littles around. So look into, ahead of time, meal delivery services in the area. Sign-up for online memberships so that you can order when need be and ensure they deliver. The same can be said for groceries.

    Potty Train or Sleep Train

If you have a child in diapers but on the verge of potty training, or if you have a toddler that likes to sleep in your bed – do your best to do as much training as possible before the baby arrives. You just won’t have the time (possibly even patience) to do so when you are nursing a newborn around the clock, and consistency (as we know now) is the key to any training. So do your best to get as much of that done as possible beforehand.

    Talk to Your Child

Whatever age, tell your child(ren) about the new sibling on the way. Be excited for them, saying things like “you are going to be the best big sister/brother!” “I can’t wait for this baby to meet you, they are so lucky to have you!” Include them in the preparations, doing so will help the welcome the new baby, and remember to try and give them attention after as well (the best you can of course). Prepare to have a gift or item to present to them for becoming a big brother/sister as well.

However, at the end of the day, enjoy being pregnant with your second or third precious baby,  prepare as you can, and try not to get caught up in the what to dos. Rest assured…it will all work out and you will be a great mom no matter what!

  • Fun Gender Reveal Ideas

    Fun Gender Reveal Ideas
If you choose to find out the gender of your baby, you may be thinking of how to share or find out the news. Do you want to just ask the doctor? Or do you want to do an actual gender reveal party?
The latter usually involves having the doctor write the gender on a piece of paper for you to give to a baker, who makes a cake (who will use coloured filling, you know how it goes).  This is a fun and exciting way to learn what you are having. Sharing the experience with loved ones can add to the experience.
However, if you are interested in mixing it up, perhaps considering some different gender reveal ideas. I have seen a couple of these done and it can be super cute!

    Fun Gender Reveal Ideas

    Cake smash by a sibling

This is the same as the traditional cake cutting piece. However, if you want to make it a more intimate affair and already have a child, this is super cute. Do a little photo session without child doing a cake smash. When you have a few snaps, put together a collage and circulate to friends and family. We did this idea with our second child. I love that we got to have our son do the gender reveal for us!

    Confetti poppers

    gender reveal

Some bakery shops or art supply stores, sell gender reveal poppers. These kind of look like push pops. You just push the bottom upwards until “POP!” You will be sprinkled with pink or blue confetti. This idea can actually be a DIY project (of course not by you, but by someone you trust).

    White canvas with coloured spray

If you love art, this may be a super cool way to do it! Have a trusted friend fill an opaque paint spray bottle with either pink or blue paint. As your guests arrive, set-up a white canvas…then spray to create a gender revealing masterpiece!

    Paint powder on white tees

Similar to the canvas idea, but with some guest participation. On your invitation, be sure to ask guests to wear white (maybe warn them that they will get paint on them). Have a friend fill a paint gun with the appropriate paint powder. Have your guests line up and shower them with powder. I saw this done at the beach once. It was beautiful!

  • Great Essentials for Your Hospital Bag

Great Essentials for Your Hospital Bag

The fantastic thing about the hospital is that they really have the essentials on hand whether it is the fantastic full mesh panties or diapers. In any medical environment where you are excited, nervous, anxious and vulnerable it is beneficial to have the peace-of-mind of bringing what you feel like you will need.

One Tough Mother Postpartum Survival Kit

This kit is created by a local BC Mom and shipping is free in BC as well. This kit is meant you to feel empowered with the essentials that you need for after your birthing experience. Included in this kit:

    • One Tough Mother eBook that provides practical information that will help you understand everything from prenatal course options and whether a doula might be right for you, to how EI works and where the best local Mama and baby hang outs are. Comes with useful checklists and real life Mama experiences.
    • Disposable Nursing Pads (4 sets)
    • Reusable Nursing Pads (1 set)
    • Heavy Pads (12)
    • Witch Hazel
    • Peri Bottle
    • Hospital Grade Mesh Underwear (3 pairs)
    • Nipple Cream
    • Ibuprofen
    • Stool Softener
    • Snack
    • Epsom Salts

    Favourites from Home

Comfort is key! Bring your favourite pillows, housecoat, pajamas, baggy sweatpants, and favourite no-slip socks or slippers. Nursing bra or two are important to have on hand. Shirts that make for easy skin-to-skin access are the best to pack. You may not know how long your stay will be so dry shampoo and if you wear make-up basics might be a good item to have on hand for when you have visitors and pictures being taken. Chapstick, brush, deodorant and hair ties. Don’t forget about a few items for your partner too. A bag to put dirty clothing is essential.

    Shower Essentials

Bring large towels from home if you think that will make you feel more comfortable. Flip flops or no-slip shoes are great idea. Bring your favourite body wash. Depending on the length of your stay you might want to have razors on hand for yourself and spouse. Toothbrushes, toothpaste and facewash.

    Playlists

Music can make any experience more enjoyable and sleeping in the hospital can be challenging. Most hospitals have free wifi so I recommend making a few playlists and downloading a few podcasts or streaming your favourite movies or shows to help past the time. Don’t forget your charger!

    Food

Depending on the hospital that you give birth in your food options may be limited. It’s always a great idea to pack snacks for yourself and your partner. Research local food options and download the local food apps whether it be Skip The Dishes or Uber Eats. Pack change for vending machines. Bring a water bottle or a re-usable coffee cup.

    Baby Essentials

The hospital will have diapers but can always bring a specific brand or reusable options and bum cream are a great idea. A few onesies as they can get dirtier than you would expect. I would also bring a few different sizes as you can never fully predict what size the baby will be. Bring an extra bag for any essentials that are sent home with you. What essentials were you happy you had for your hospital stay?

  • 5 Travel Essentials For a Toddler

5 Travel Essentials For a Toddler

Are you planning on travelling this summer with your toddler? I know how daunting it can be to prepare to travel with your little one. So, I am putting together a list of travel essentials for a toddler!

    toddler

    1. Ozark Trail Kid’s Flocked Air Bed

I recently purchased the Ozark Trail Kid’s Flocked Air Bed from Walmart Canada and I absolutely love this item. Ever since having my daughter, I always tend to stress about travelling with my daughter, not knowing where she will sleep or where we would set up her pack and play and now that she is older, there are a whole new set of challenges that come with travelling with a toddler; but with the Ozark Air Bed, I don’t have to worry about how we will set her up for bed time now. This air bed has raised sides all around it so the chances of a toddler falling out of bed is very slim! And even better, when it deflates, it is easy to pack and haul where ever you are travelling and its small enough when it is inflated that we don’t have to worry about having a ton of room for her bed. I am so excited to use this bed on our upcoming trips!

    toddler

    2. Toys

When we go on road trips, I always make sure to have a bag packed with a number of different toys to keep my daughter entertained through a long road trip. I like to pack her a few of her favourite toys, which include her LeapFrog 2-in-1 LeapTop Touch Tablet, and I also make sure to pack her some toys that are either new or ones that she hasn’t played with in a long time to help keep her entertained. I know that if we didn’t have some toys for her during our drive, we would have had some very long car rides.

    toddler

    3. Snacks

Snacks are a huge travel essential for a toddler. When you think of packing snacks for a trip, make sure you make them friendly for the method of travel. We will be making a 10-12 hour drive for our trip, so I am thinking of things such as grapes, carrot sticks, peppers, berries, and anything that can be put into little Rubbermaid containers and that can be easily packed into a cooler. These Rubbermaid containers are my favourite for packing snacks in. They are a nice size so you can easily pack several full of snacks and they fit nicely in my toddlers hands. You can find these containers at Superstore, Walmart, and I have even seen them at our local Dollarama.

    toddler

    4. Lovies

If your children are anything like my daughter, they’ll need to have their lovies with them. For my daughter, she has a few “lovies” and I know if we don’t have them within arms reach for her, then our road trip will be awful and we will be finding the closest convenience store  to be finding a new lovie for our daughter (this has happened to us on occasion….#momfail). If we don’t have our lovies, there is no sleep happening.

    toddler

    5. Medication

This may seem like a silly travel essential for a toddler, but we have learned the hard way. If your child gets car sick like my daughter, then having some children’s Gravol is a must. I will also be sure to have a little bucket and some old towels and a couple of changes of clothes just in case. I have had first hand experience having recently done a 6 hour road trip with just me and my daughter and I was not prepared for her car sickness and I had to pull over on the side of Highway 2 south of Calgary to get her cleaned up. After that road trip, I now know to have Gravol with us! In addition to Gravol, I also like to make sure I have Advil or Tylenol. We don’t usually give our daughter pain medication like that, but with her top two 2 year molars not having cut yet, I need to be prepared for a teething toddler!

A Few Other Travel Essentials for a Toddler

While this isn’t a complete list of travel essentials for a toddler, these are just a few of my must haves that are easily accessible, but I wanted to share a couple of other things you may want to include.

My family LOVES music, so having age appropriate music on my playlist is a must. Something that is fun to sing along to or bob your head with the music. This is a way for us all to have a good time as a family. My daughter may not be able to sing the words to a song, but that doesn’t stop her from singing along, and it is one of my favourite sounds in this world.

    toddler

We don’t love to give our toddler a tablet, but for road trip purposes, we will download a few shows or movies that may keep her entertained during our long drives. I will also make sure to have a few educational games downloaded for her. One of her favourite games is Kids Vehicles by 22Learn. This game allows her to build vehicles like a fire truck, digger, and others. After she’s done building the vehicles, there are tasks to do, like extinguish a fire with the fire truck.

I also have a little blanket for my daughter for when she is ready to have a nap. Make sure they are as cozy as possible while ensuring their safety.

One thing to remember when you are getting your travel essentials for a toddler ready, is to not overwhelm yourself. Keep it simple. But, make sure your child is comfortable and knows what is happening is okay. Some kids don’t like schedules to change, so just be calm and patient, this is a huge adjustment for some kids – especially on long drives. And don’t have any expectations on your drive and go with the flow. That will help make your road trip more bearable for you and your child.

  • 9 Fun Ways To Celebrate Your New Baby

9 Fun Ways To Celebrate Your New Baby

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a very special time and as parents we want to celebrate this new life in the best way possible. These days there are so many new ways to do this that it can make your head spin. So us here at Modern Mama thought we would compile the big list of ways to celebrate your new baby!

    “Dip-a-Stick” or “Pee Stick Party”

One of the newest trends out there for couples trying to conceive in the digital age. Most of these parties are held in a virtual platform gathering friends and loved ones for the big moment. Those nail biting two minutes waiting to see what your pregnancy test will read. A new way to gather support and positive thoughts on your journey to motherhood.

    Classic Baby Shower

We all know the classic baby shower recipe. Lots of themed food, drinks from baby bottles, chocolate smeared diapers and bow hats. This timeless tradition is usually female only but men are known to be active, though not always willing, participants. Usually paired with a gift registry having a larger emphasis on material gifts – we think this is the perfect party for the first time mom. Every mom should have this type of classic baby shower at least once.

    Baby Sprinkle

If the large parade of a classic baby shower seems like too much for you then a “Baby Sprinkle” might be exactly what you need. A more intimate affair the baby sprinkle is perfect for the 2nd or 3rd time mom. Guest list is usually smaller and not solely female, and need for gift giving isn’t a focus. Usually guests at these types of events will pool in for one big ticket item mom would never buy herself, only for mom gifts, or just well wishes.

    Big Gender Reveals

What used to be done as family only thing is starting to turn into big family events. Especially for parents with multiples this can be a great way to celebrate a new baby in a fun way with your whole extended family. Aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters, brothers, girlfriends and neighbors all gather for the big reveal. It is a the perfect way to get everyone involved focusing on family and fun over gifts. This is the perfect event to bring gifts for mom so she can spoil herself before her new addition arrives!

    celebrate

    Mommy Party

This new age idea is a really wild way to celebrate your new baby with your girlfriends. Almost like a bachelorette party without all the drinking it usually all about pampering mom in the most lavish of ways. Where your girlfriends will take you away on a spa weekend getaway, a fun night out to your favorite restaurant paired with every ice cream shop you can hit before midnight! This is great for a laid back mom who needs some support from her girls and time to love herself.

    Blessingway

A blessingway is one of the kindest new trends and incredible for a nervous mom about to give birth. Done as close to the mom’s due date as possible this event is solely focused on encouragement and calming mom before the big day. This event can be held in person or virtually so you can include family from all over the world. This gives them a chance to send words of love and support to help mom feel her strongest when finally experiencing labor. Doing this type of event online also gives moms and family a chance to even get support during labor!

    Diaper Party

You think that dad and his friends are feeling a little left out when it comes to celebrating a new baby? Why not plan a Diaper Party, basically a baby shower for men only where craft beers or fancy scotch is served and the only gifts expected is diapers, diapers and more diapers. This is the perfectly practical way to help dad get excited for the new baby coming his way. Pair this with a sporting event and you will be the coolest pregnant lady on the block!

    Grandma Party

Becoming a grandma is a super amazing time and has only recently started being celebrated. It can be an incredible way to help two families bond as well having both sides of the family in attendance and celebrating together. Making grandma feel special can be a wonderful way to spread the love and make her feel needed as her children start having children of their own. Get them excited about their new role in your life.

    Sip and See Party

The sip and see is the best way to minimize the constant flow of people coming and going after baby is born. Arranging a specific day for your family and friends to come over and meet the new baby can be a huge sanity savour in the first weeks of life with new baby. A great idea for these parties is to bring frozen dinners for the new family to help them rest a little easier during these sleepless months.

There are so many ways to celebrate your new little bundle of joy and we hope we helped you find the perfect party ideas for you and your family!

  • 4 Baby Registries with Awesome Perks

4 Baby Registries with Awesome Perks

Congratulations!  You are going to have a baby!

Now you get to start planning for the arrival of your new bundle of joy.

Creating a baby registry can be very helpful in the planning process. I have talked with a lot of new parents that don’t know what they need for their baby. As you start to think about what you want for your baby you can use your registry to make a list. This will help you keep track of what you have thought about and what you still need. All of the items you put on your registry can be edited at any time. Make sure you include the big items as well. Some people like to buy a gift as a group so they can purchase a higher priced item.

Registries are very easy to share with friends and family.  All you need to do is tell them the website and they can look it up by using your name. This will help them pick out a gift of something you want and need. Lots of people love to be able to get you what you want and not have to hunt for it. Make sure you share your registry with all the guests that are invited to your baby shower.

I have put together a list of 4 stores you can create a baby registry with. Each of these stores offer coupons and a free gift when you create a baby registry with them. If you are up for it, you can create a registry at all of them or pick the one that works best for you.
